In this post:

  • What are “posts”?
  • The importance of posts in your industry
  • How Posts help SEO

What are Posts?

I briefly discussed the basics of posts in Part 3: Pages, Posts, Products, and Plugins, but in order to really understand all there is to know about posts, we’ll have to dig a bit deeper, and break up our learning into several different parts.

To put it simply, you see “posts” in your WordPress User Interface, your audience will see blog posts. Any time you want to update your blog, you will add a new post, sound simple? It is.

These blog posts, all came from us adding posts.

The importance of posts in your industry:

Being able to post to your own website, without the help of a web-designer was probably the main reason why you went with the WordPress Content Management System, whether it was a conscious decision or not… good job! With advances in technology, available information, and online help, there is no reason to pay someone hundreds or thousands of dollars to maintain your site. At 11eleven Studio we will help you with some content creation and formatting (for an hourly fee) but we would love to see you thrive and spend that money on growing your business; I know, it seems weird for us to not take your money, but if you’re happy… we hope you’ll refer us to a friend!

Search Engine Optimization is important!

I constantly see blog-less websites, in every industry; this bothers me. Fairly recent changes in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) have created a large need for fresh and pertinent, high quality content in order to become, or remain relevant in your industry. Search Engines are likely to be the main source of traffic for any industry, even if people know your business name, they’ll probably google it to find your website… do you really want your competitors showing up in front of you when someone googles your company’s name?

Posts will be your main source of connecting with your audience, as well as slowly ranking you higher and higher on search engine results. As stated before, recent changes to Google’s (and Bing/Yahoo’s) algorithms has changed the landscape of SEO; Sites with “shady” or “blackhat” SEO methods have been removed altogether from search engine results and many companies have suffered because they tried to take shortcuts, do not let your company be one of them! We stay up on current SEO practices so that you don’t have to.

How Posts Help SEO:

While there are many factors that go into ranking high on search engine results, the main two are: Have your site built with SEO in mind (proper meta-data, structure, linking etc..), and consistent-strategic use of well planned keywords or phrases. Now since this is a subject that could take 100 blog posts to explain effectively (seriously, I was talking to my wife about it last night, and she pretty much dozed off), I will give you an example:

Editing the meta data with keyword in mind

So, say I want 11eleven Studio to rank highly for the key phrase 11eleven Studio. I would start by making sure that my site was optimized with this keyword in mind, all titles, meta-data, and pages would have the term “11eleven Studio” in the correct places – but be careful of over use or “spamming” as this will count against you. I’d make blog posts on a continuous basis with this term repeated several times in the content, my meta-data (data entered by web-designers to help describe the information of an object) would use this term in an appropriate manner, and I would make sure to link to different spots on my site and other reliable sites with hyperlinks. I must stress: you do not want to over do this! Your audience does not want to see random key-phrases on the post, and you should not produce low-quality content in the name of SEO, your credibility will suffer, and in turn – your search engine ranking with drop.
